Paldies, atradu.
Customer Question
I have a 97 Jetta. The AC had been working fine but yesterday it started having problems. When I push the AC button in and turn the fan to 1, the light on the AC button comes on but the fan does not turn on. I can feel compressor working. When I turn the fan to 2, the AC light goes out (and I can feel the compressor stop) and the fan turns on. Cold air blows for a few seconds and then fan continues blowing but it is not cold. I am not much of a mechanic but I am not completely incompetent either (I managed to put in a new starter on my own and have done other minor repairs), but this is a new one for me. Any ideas on the problem? Is it an AC problem or something electrical?

This problem will be caused by a bad resistor for the blower motor. In the first speed position the blower switch sends current directly to the a/c on switch but in all other speeds the current to the a/c on switch must travel through the resistors low speed fan circuit. On your resistor the low speed has burned out so you only get power to the a/c on switch when the switch is on low speed. Since the resistor is bad on low speed you also get no blower operation on low. Replacing the blower resistor will solve this problem.
